Healthy Fourth of July Recipes: Vegans BBQ Too!

July Fourth is almost here and for many Americans, that means firing up the grill for a cookout. This year, we hope you’ll use our healthy Fourth of July recipes and declare independence from the usual unhealthy-to-the-point-of-being-dangerous barbeque fare.


Why a Vegan BBQ?

We get it. Lots of folks think that “vegan” and “barbeque” are contradictory terms. Some of your family and friends may be among them. But here’s a fact: grilling meats – including chicken and seafood – produces carcinogens called heterocyclic amines that, when ingested, can alter your DNA and turn on the cancer genes. Kind of gives new meaning to the term “die-hard carnivore”, doesn’t it? But here’s the good news: you can have a fun and healthy Fourth of July BBQ. Recipes to make your day yummy include: Grilling vegetables. This is a healthy alternative to grilling meets because grilling vegetables does not produce those killer compounds. So, a Vegan BBQ can give you all of the fun and lots of yummy flavors without any of the potential damage. 


Healthy Fourth of July Recipes: Easy as One, Two, Three!

You can create a star-spangled vegan BBQ that will win raves with very little effort. The trick is to let the whole foods shine by subtly enhancing flavors rather than masking them with, say, a heavy layer of mayonnaise or sugary BBQ sauce. Here are three of our favorite – and easiest – healthy Fourth of July recipes.These vegan BBQ treats will be the star attractions this Independence Day!


One: Veggie Burgers


• 3 cups brown rice, pre-cooked

• 2 cups soft bread crumbs (use a gluten-free and wheat-free bread)

• 1 1/2 cup mixed vegetables, finely chopped (try carrot, mushrooms, corn and peppers)

• salt and pepper to taste

• fresh garlic and onions chopped or garlic powder and onion powder to taste & any other herbs of choice: IE: parsley/cilantro , etc.

• 1/8 cup olive oil

Mix thoroughly and form into round patties. Place on grill and cook until warm. (About 3 minutes per side.)


Two: Grilled Portobello Mushroom Caps 

The night before your barbeque, make a marinade by combining:

• 1 C Water

• ½ C Extra Virgin Olive Oil

• 1 1/2 T Nama Shoyu 

• 1 1/2 T Coconut Vinegar

• Sprinkle of Garlic, onion, rosemary powder, sea salt and pepper to taste.

Remove the stems from four mushrooms. Place the caps in the marinade and let soak for 1 hour. Place on grill and cook until soft and warm. (About 3 minutes per side.)

Three: The Sides!

The side dishes for a vegan BBQ can be as varied as your imagination – and the food combination chart – allows! Healthy Fourth of July recipes certainly aren’t complete without delicious sides!

• Try grilled asparagus with fresh rosemary, oregano, sea salt.


• Load up skewers with chunks of carrot, bell pepper – use all the colors! – cherry tomatoes, cauliflower and broccoli, or any combination of vegetables that appeals to you. Marinate the vegetables, or just brush with olive oil and fresh lemon, and sprinkle with sea salt and pepper for a grilled treat even the kids will love!



• Sprinkle corn on the cob it with nutritional yeast, sea salt and fresh pepper for a true taste of summer.



• Grilled polenta is another sure-fire crowd pleaser.



• Don’t forget the raw sides! These staff favorites are great healthy Fourth of July recipes as well.

If you’re wondering how to fight fatigue on a daily basis, you’ll want to follow an anti-inflammatory diet. Fortunately, this is easy to do. Here are some basics to keep in mind:

  • “Veg out.” Vegetables are perhaps the best foods to fight fatigue. They help boost your energy levels because they are easy to assimilate. They contain fiber, which helps move food through your system naturally, and they are less irritating to the colon than foods like animal products, or processed and refined foods. Vegetables leave less residue behind, and less residue means less inflammation.
  • Almost all vegetables will help your body reduce its level of inflammation but some are such high performers that that you’ll want to give them a starring role whenever possible. Try any of these members of the Brassica family, which all are great sources of the flavonoids and anti-oxidants your body craves to fight fatigue:
  • Kale – tear the leaves from the rib to use in a salad, or try it sautéed with ginger and garlic, or lightly steamed with a touch of lemon juice.
  • Cabbage – shred it and add a light dressing, or use it in a soup.
  • Broccoli and Cauliflower – great in salads and stir-fry dishes, or steamed in a small amount of bouillon seasoned water (Seitenbacher’s broth is great) but also try these cruciferous superstars steamed, with lemon and a sprinkle of Bragg’s Amino Acids for a simple, yummy side dish.
  • Avocado, mushrooms, onions and garlic should also be staples on your shopping list of foods that fight fatigue.
  • Spice things up! Many spices, including cinnamon, cloves, and ginger are powerful and delicious ways to fight inflammation. Turmeric, which lends its bright yellow color to curry, deserves special mention for its inflammation-fighting abilities. Try it in stir fries or even smoothies.
  • Go nuts! Walnuts, particularly, can help keep inflammation at bay. In one study as little as four walnuts increased blood levels of omega-3s, which help the body manage inflammation. 4 walnuts! Now that’s how to fight fatigue!
